Reiki in Hospital settings

Reiki has gained significant traction in hospitals in the USA as a complementary therapy, with over 1000 hospitals offering it to patients. It's used pre- and post- operatively to manage anxiety and pain and is often recommended for cardiac patients and those with stress-related conditions. It is commonly used to help patients in days leading up to and on the day of their surgery.

Hospitals are finding that Reiki sessions contribute to patients healing faster with less pain. Reiki has been used in hospital operating rooms since as early as the mid 1990s and has since grown. In 2007, a survey indicated that about 15% (over 800) of U.S. hospitals were offering Reiki as a regular part of patient services.

A further report, published in 2009, revealed that 37% of hospitals were offering CAM (Complimentary & Alternative Medicine) treatments, including touch therapy. Reiki is also offered to hospital staff to help them to manage stress and improve their well being.

We can only hope that Australia will catch up, and recognise the value of both Reiki and other CAM treatments.
