Chiron ~ the wounded healer
Chiron will ingress Taurus tomorrow morning 7.19am AEST 20/6/26
Chiron commonly wears the tag line of “the wounded healer”. Australian astrologer, Lynda Hill, refers to it as “the stories we tell ourselves”.
This asteroid belongs to a group known as centaurs and has a 50 year cycle.
If you’re over 50, you might observe or recall a wound or injury (physical, emotional or psychological) with it’s roots around 50 years prior, potentially being reactivated.
A few years ago, I broke my wrist playing backyard soccer with some boys under my care. When they were told later, they didn’t believe it was actually broken as I’d masked the pain, most probably due to shock, but also as I felt a duty of care to them I'd put on a “brave face”.
When plastered, I realised it had been 50 years since I’d first and last been in plaster.
That occasion had followed a school accident when I’d been playing with a group of friends and lost the top of my finger, resulting in a full arm plaster.
At just 4 years old, I hadn’t cried. I'd found my older friend (in grade 2) and told her that my finger was bleeding. No doubt, in shock.
Contemplating this 50 year timing, I’d been initially baffled, as I’d turned to the lens of the cosmic clock, and had run through the planets trying to work out which planet fit with a 50 year cycle, before realising Chiron!
Chiron's primary wound was of rejection by his nymph mother, horrified due to birthing a centaur, half man, half horse (the product of rape, by Chronos/Saturn, that’s another story!). He was raised by Apollo/Sun and Artemis and and went on to become an acclaimed healer and oracle and renowned teacher to a good number of the greatest Greek mythic heroes, including Achilles, Asclepius, Peleus and Jason (of the Argonauts).
In the Iliad, Homer calls Chiron the "wisest and justest of all the centaurs.”
He was accidentally shot with a poisoned arrow shot by friend and student Heracles when caught up in a frenzied scuffle with a group of unruly centaurs who'd become Intoxicated. He was unable to heal the wound and was left in unbearable pain. Hence, the wounded healer.
Sacrifice is part of his story. Due to this incurable wound and unbearable pain, he offered to take the place of Prometheus - bringer of fire to the humans - who was punished by Zeus by being chained to a rock where every day his liver was pecked out by an ealge, associated with Zeus, (in some tellings a griffin) and regrown overnight, to contine the same fate each day and night.
Chiron made a plea that they needn’t both suffer and that he should take the place of Prometheus.
It is said that for this ultimate act of self sacrifice, he was made immortal as the constellation Sagittarius.
We all have Chiron somewhere in our charts. Where might you be asked to make a sacrifice of a mortal wound, for the gain of the recognition of your own divinity?
Where, might you able to teach and share with others, for their benefit, as a result of your own wounding?
Where is Taurus in your chart? Taurus is fixed Earth. With Chiron’s ingress into Taurus, our bodies, our relationship with our values, love and money will all be under the gaze of Chiron.
Make time to treat yourself to whatever makes you feel good in your body! Time in Nature. Massage, a long bath or soak in the hot springs, dance, good food - a Reiki session! Ride or connect with a horse and your own animal nature. Whatever it takes. It’s time!
